Zola has nothing on us
In his Rougon-Macquart saga
Our families are riddled with
Poverty, alcoholism, divorces
Working class exploitation victims
Illegitimacy, abandoned children
Violence of all sorts
The dregs of society really
So far the best achievement
Is a latent mediocrity
Separation, illiteracy add to it all
Don’t expect me to laud them.

We are the weeds of humanity
Just determined survivors
On the genome lottery
We are the winners
Miserable as we are
To have gone thru wars,
Invasions, genocides,
Displacement, pandemics
Looking at history
It is a wonder
We’ve not been wiped out

So many have not made it
Disappeared in the dissolving
Soup that is eternity
Our future is likely
To be as bleak as our past
Reality checks make it certain.
