El Niño

The seasons pass, the landscape suffers
The gorgeous wattles replaced
By the blatant splash of the canola fields
The weeks follow each other
Bringing the hot weather with them
The paddocks disrobed to the naked
Parched soil cry of thirst
On land with no water access
While the verdancy of the glutted ones
Imprints deeply the contrasting
Colours of the Australian palette
Reduced to the bare emptiness
Stocks have disappeared from the landscape
No more roos peopling the paddocks
No more swans grazing on green pastures
No more Pelicans flying above the lake
No more cormorants diving in the dam
El Niño is here no doubt about it.
