Taking flight at our approach
Wild ducks, herons
Cormorants and ibis
Disturb the peaceful surface
Of the black waters
Forming a scrying mirror
Open to the sky
The softest breeze
Causes a shivering
Of ripples and wrinkles
In random light flares
Twisting the deceptive perspective
Of the tall gumtrees and wattles
In their topsy-turvy reflection
Endlessly swaying and waving
Amongst the fleeting clouds
Illusionary sight offered to us
Passing by these dark waters.
