Poetry oblige

Silence is best
Refuge is found in solitude
Protection is assured
Afraid?
On the contrary I'm happy
No one will disturb me
I can contemplate my success
It is small by all means
Meaningful for me nonetheless
It says I'm a poet
Until now I was free
To laud, to rant, to sing, to cry,
To hate, to love, to deride and decry
It didn't matter
Now downing the poet's robe
New responsibilities I endorse
To help and support
To defend and honour
Duties they are
For poetry oblige.
